adjective - Botany

Growing toward or away from the light. Taking a particular direction under the influence of light.

Out there is a light,
and we're going to keep on chasing it.

I'm Mandalynn! As I grew up in Michigan, surrounded by nature's beauty, it shaped who I am today. I love to set tough physical goals for myself, and that's how I fell in love with hiking. As hiking turned into backpacking, I quickly realized that my allergies made buying food difficult. I can't have wheat or dairy, and I don't eat meat, which really limits my options. So I began to create my own meals, and what a process its been! I enjoy carrying a tune and extra items, sometimes art supplies and an instrument. I also love to pack a lot of socks. What seems most meaningful, and sticks with me about each new journey are the amazing people and connections along the way. Backpacking is my passion; I am thankful for every night I am lucky enough to spend out under the stars.

Life is a Thru-Hike

In 2016 we took on the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. After walking 2200 miles, we had to cut our trip short due to the early onset of winter weather in the North Cascades of Washington State. In 2018 we attempted to finish the remaining miles, but were forced off trail due to several imminent wildfires.
You can read all about that here.

Now in 2019, we are taking on the Arizona Trail (~800 miles) followed by the Appalachian Trail (~1200 miles). This walk should take close to 8 months -and we are by no means in a rush to finish it! While there are hard days on trail (imagine being on the edge of heat exhaustion all day, or hiking by headlamp through a windstorm at 1 a.m.) it still beats a day at the office. You can find a chronicle of our journeys on the Arizona Trail here. Or the Appalachian trail here.

We believe in a sustainable approach to thru-hiking. We are constantly experimenting with different strategies to maximize our means of accomplishing this. While this often means carrying a little more weight when compared to traditional gear and methods, we find the trade off worth it. As part of this effort we also dehydrate all of our own meals for our extended hikes.
